Ostrich Runner is a racing, or better to say - running, game, where you control an ostrich.
The introduction story tells about a planet populated by peaceful ostriches which one day becomes the subject of the mischievous plot by evil Professor Kosmoglux. He decides to steal all the unhatched eggs in order to turn the newborn ostriches into his personal army. The plan fails, because professor's assistant loses all eggs from the hollow sack on his way back to spaceship. It doesn't change the fact that the eggs have been stolen and now the fastest of ostriches are sent to collect them back, but professor is not going to give up easily...
Game can be played in campaign or competition mode. In campaign mode you have to progress through various "worlds", each divided into stages. To proceed to next stage you must win the race and also collect the given number of eggs. Except your rival ostriches who slow you down if you collide with them there are various obstacles along the way, as well as traps set by Professor Kosmoglux. You have to repeat the stage from the beginning if you lose all lives, however you have unlimited number of tries to beat each level, so you are never moved back to the beginning of the game if you fail. Progress is saved automatically when you beat the level. There are also two hidden stages and minigames, available when you finish each world.
In hotseat/splitscreen mode you can play with your friend. For this mode you can choose any of the "worlds".
Chroelle : And that dear CWF-members is why the system here works. Different taste gives a strong validation. So if you see something that is a 6 then you will most likely like it too, and if you see a 4 and think it might be more like a 6 then most likely I can assure you that other members coming to download feels it should have been a 2.
The system works.
Pater Alf : Do yourself a favour and play this on easy difficulty level. It seems nearly impossible for me to succeed on any other one (and even on that I had problems at race 4 the latest). There are just too many obstacles and too many ways to loose energy and finaly die. Also the controlling isn't very smooth and because of that it's hard to avoid collisions sometimes. All in all I felt much more frustration than enjoyment while I played this game.
On the other hand there are also some nice things to say: The childbook-like intro is great and the music is nice also. There is two-player splitscreen mode and online multiplayer, so you can play it with your friends (who are hopefully not as dumb as the computer opponents) and graphics are funny and colourful.
Not my cup of tea, but there are certainly players out there who might enjoy a very hard racing game.
Drasir-Vel : The levels were colourful and varied. It has a decent story. The controls left a lot to be desired. The jumping especially felt a bit loose. You couldn't quite feel when you landed, and it felt like you were more like hovering over the ground than jumping, especially with the spring powerup. Otherwise the pace in the game is quick and it is possible to learn to avoid most obstacles.
Chroelle : This is hilarious! It is hard to keep track of both your position in the race, the amount of eggs you collected and the number of lives left. But you still get a good racing feeling and the obstacles come crashing at you in numerous new ways all the time. I am definently returning to this one to try and complete it.
eMTe : Hilarious racing (?) game featuring ostriches. You have to compete with other ostriches, collecting eggs along the way and avoiding obstacles. Two-player mode, multiplayer and gorgeous graphics. I didnt have fun with it though, because it runs way too slow. Good luck.
Truly great game and very well designed. As author admits, it's a mixture of Sokoban and Kula-World. So if you loved these games youll love Kiki... as well.
Game has won the categories "best graphics", "best originality" and "best overall game' in the uDevGame Game Programming Contest 2002.
