Maniac Mansion Deluxe (2004)

by LucasFan Games

Twenty years ago today...

...Lucasfilm Games released the game "Maniac Mansion" that became a milestone in in the history of adventure games. It introduced a new revolutionary gameplay (Point'n Click) to the genre as well as the possibility of multiple user-selectable characters and multiple possible endings (depending from the abilities and decisions of the characters you choose in the beginning of the game) and a certain kind of humour that dominated the genre for some years. "Maniac Mansion" (the first game that was written with the SCUMM engine) was a huge success for Lucasfilm Games and it was followed by some of the best adventures of all times (like "Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders", "The Secret of Monkey Island", "Sam & Max" or "Day of the Tentacle").

The Story:
Sandy, girlfriend of the games' hero Dave has been kidnapped by evil scientist Dr. Fred Edison. So Dave has to gather two friends around him and go to the old mansion to rescue her.
The game was a hommage/parody to the old B-movies and pulp stories, so expect evil purple meteors, tentacle creatures, evil professors, secret labs, nymphomanic wives and everything else yo know from trash movies...

"Maniac Mansion Deluxe" is a 1:1 remake of the original "Maniac Mansion" except for the graphics (but these have the classic LucasArts style as well) and the fact that thy made the game run under Windows. So if you never played "Maniac Mansion" or want to experience this great game again this is your chance.

Game comes along with translations to German, Spanish and French.

Discussion on our forums on Maniac Mansion Deluxe

  • Chroelle :
I gave this game a good run with a walkthrough, but didn't finish it yet. I think it deserves a place, since there is plenty of gameplay in it. Things aren't that obvious, and you will need to keep on your feet the whole time. Sure has a Lucasy feel to it, and I am surprised they didn't go for a Day of the tentacle remake right after finishing this.
  • Scythe :
How great is a remake of the original Lucasarts graphic adventure game, with improved graphics and interface? It's beyond awesome! If you never played this, don't cheat yourself! It's the greatest B-movie graphic adventure game ever made.
  • Chroelle :
After thinking this over I think we can actually go for it. Any problems later discovered will of course lead to the game being removed immediately.
I will go play it now.

    How rude of us..
Yes Usul we noticed, and it is being discussed elsewhere after you posted...
I think we need to put this game on hold for now, and then look at it later... I would like to dig down to the bottom of this before accepting it. One of our principles is that we host LEGAL games, and it would be sad to have that ruined by a single game...

    Booh!

Was just browsing and saw my name.....

Indeed I am the translator of the Dutch version of the text.

    How legal is this......it's doubtfull....

Look for example at the remake King's Quest I (the authors had no problems). But KQ9 was put on hold after a letter from Sierra.

Since this game is made with a completely different engine the original, so I don't expect any problems. If LucasArts wanted to take action, they would contact the authors of the game first, and their homepage is gone.

  • eMTe :
Afaik Swiebe was involved in the project... He's an author of Dutch translation, so might have some info on copyright issues...
  • Usul :
Anyone noticed what I wrote in the Racer-Request-Thread?

I am sure that the sounds during the race come from Carmageddon II that is still sold...

  • Pater Alf :
No, I don't think so. As far as I know LucasGames doesn't want any of their old games to be distributed as freeware or abandonware.
  • Chroelle :
As far as I understand it is legal to produce a game as long as it does not have pieces of code from the other game. But if that includes the story/dialogue, then I'm not sure...
But if we check with the developer of this game then we can't be too bad off I think. But I am not sure that the original isn't freeware too...

Here we have a 1:1 remake of the classic LucasArt adventure "Maniac Mansion". I'm sure I donīt have to explain what the game is about, but I will anyway...

Game is an exact 1:1 remake of the original, they changed nothing except of the graphics and made it run under windows. Also there are translations to spanish, french and german. So play it and have fun!

License status: We better check this. Is it really legal to make a 1:1 copy of an original game (seems like product piracy to me?)?
