Hex-a-hop (2005)

by Tom Beaumont

Hex-a-hop is a puzzle game based on hexagonal tiles. There is no time limit and no real-time elements. The objective is simply to destroy all the green hexagonal tiles on each of the 100 levels. As you progress through the game, more types of tiles are introduced which make things more difficult and interesting (hopefully). It is built on top of SDL, which is an open-source layer for direct media access.

"Hex-a-hop" really is a nice puzzler. It's great fun to play and you really have to use your brain to find the solution in some levels. Because of the different types of tiles you can find in later levels (like trampoline tiles or laser tile) the game always stays challenging and interesting and the game won't get boring for the whole 100 levels.

Please notice that the Mac version of the game may not run on all machines; it's only been successfully tested on an Intel Mac 10.4.8. It doesn't work on PowerPC Macs.

Discussion on our forums on Hex-a-hop

  • Pater Alf :
I checked the new version of the game. Unfortunately the music is quite monotonous and right at the moment the game is more enjoyable without it. But some of the sound effects are really ok. I think there is still much room for improvement. But it's just a first release and I'm pretty sure the guys will come up with something better soon.
  • Pater Alf :
It seems that they mainly want to add sounds and music to the game. There is already a new version to download. I will try it and tell you what I think.

About the six weeks: I have to admit that there are some levels that I'm not able to master. I always end up with a score above par... :(

  • eMTe :
More than six weeks passed Im afraid. :D

Now to the main topic. News! News!

    http://hexahop.sourceforge.net/

Group of people took over the project (with or without Tom's permission) and will try to develop it further. Who knows, maybe new features or levels are planned.

  • Pater Alf :
You still have the chance. Three more nightshifts are over and my current score is 100% completed, 67% mastered.

This leaves you with six weeks to beat me on this (until my next nightshifts start)...

  • eMTe :
Then I must hurry if I want to beat you...
  • Pater Alf :
Things to do during boring nightshifts... ;)

I finally completed all 100 levels of this amazing puzzle game. There are still more than 50 levels I have to solve in par though (but there will be some more nightshifts as well).

  • eMTe :
80% complete. In fact, maybe it's only about 50% as some of you might know. :)

Gets higher and higher on my list of best puzzlers of all time.

  • Pater Alf :
I know what you mean. I'm still playing this one and I'm working hard to post a screenshot here soon that says: "99% completed" (think I did something about 50% by now)...
  • Chroelle :
Actually a pretty neat game. A fun puzzler with lots of time-killing. 100 levels of pur puzzle. I think it is much more fun than say Icy tower when it comes to jumping games, and I must say I could easily be tricked into checking if there really was 100 levels... :D
  • eMTe :
I love this game more and more. Ive completed 8% of game total and levels are hard enough to make my head evaporate. 92% of game still ahead!! Love it!!
