Poor Rovert Bellhump! He just bought a new house on the cheap and can't figure out just why. But all is revealed to him as soon as he lays his head upon his pillow- for his new neighbors are causing quite a ruckus! And his new neighbors are Count Dracula and Castle Hasslevania!! You see tonight marks the 100th year from the last time Drac was defeated and now he's up to his noisy shenaneghans again. Rovert sets out to go and tell Drac to keep it down or he's calling the cops! (developer's description)
"Hasslevania" is the long awaited "Castlevania" parody. And it was worth the waiting. It breathes the spirit of old B-movies (just listen to the voice acting and you'll know what I mean) and it's definitely fun to play. I still can't figure out why, but for some strange reasons it's hard to stop playing once you're started.
But be aware that the game also is hard. In fact it was so hard at first that nearly everybody was stuck in the first 5% of the game and so the developer was forced to publish a new version that comes along with the "Wussy Schoolgirl" mode and now everybody should be able to get along. Don't misunderstand me: "Hasslevania" is still hard (especially in the beginning) but once you get through the first few screens and obtain the first upgrades, you'll get rewarded with a great platform game that you'll hardly will leave alone until you solved the whole thing (and then you might return to play again in a harder mode).
Maz : No need to apologize resurrection. Actually, it is perfectly Ok to resurrect threads, as long as you add something to the topic. Adding something is of course matter of interpretation, I do count everything that can be enjoyable reading for someone. After all, these forums aim to offer some fun & enjoyment.
Del_Duio : Hey guys, sorry to resurrect a dead topic but I just wanted to say that Hasslevania has been mentioned in Game for Windows magazine #15 (Feb. 2008). I'm planning on getting one tonight so I can see for myself. It also made 1up.com's list of 101 best free games of 2007, but there were probably like 105 made in 2007 so I don't know how much stock you can put into that
Also, know that I'm in the middle of working on a version 3 of the game which addresses some player issues, the big ones being forward progress in the air while swinging weapons (now that I've figured out how to get it to work) and high jumps costing only 1 skill heart instead of 2. If all goes well there might just be some bigger stuff in there but I figured I'd mention it since nobody else will!
Del_Duio : Yeah, I think I may have used a wee bit too much original NES Metroid for influence, as far as not really saying where anything is or where to go next.
Most people do tend to think that if you can force your way through the first part of the game, it does get easier and more fun.
Thank you for the vote, a vote of confidence!
Chroelle : I have now placed my vote on Hasslevania too, so only one more vote is needed, and I have a feeling that is just around the bend.
I must say I had some issues with the game, but they are just my personal oppinion.
The game has alot of features that I really loved. The graphics I found to be very appealing, and the bad voice-overs were actually quite fun (not haha but still).
The hearts system annoyed me (but I know it is essential, just not me), and the fact that I never knew where to go to next. I kept finding new areas that led me nowhere. But I gave it a good score because I like the game. The issues where simply little nagging things.
Chroelle : Its part of the christmas avatar contest on the site. I will change back after the contest is over. Or maybe to something else... (Something less comfortable...)
If you ever wanted to be a god, this is you're chance. Care for your planet and for the inhabitants that live on it. But beware: Everything you do with your godly powers will have consequences and affects your outcome in the end...
The order in which you make your decisions is yery important in this game (because you can only use every godly power once). So if you let a comet fall on the ground that is muddy from the rain it will have another... (read more)
