Quantasm (2008)

Overhead, mouse-controlled shooter featuring 100 levels and flickering backgrounds.

At the beginning of each level your flightless ship is placed in the centre of polygonal shape, be it simple triangle or extended star-like figure, and waves of enemies appear in its corners, flying towards you. Leftmouse shoots, rightmouse destroys all visible enemies if you possess a bomb. Various other bonuses appear in later stages, some helping you in battle, some multiplying the score. Highscores can be submitted online.

According to Stu Collier (head coder) Quantasm is based on Bedlam, game made for Vectrex, an old 8-bit console.

  There's almost no replayability.
  
  There are many kinds of replayabilities. You can choose alternate paths in adventure game, finish different sidequests in rpg, choose various strategies in war game or win more points in arcade game. That last kind is least replayabilitish of all on my private ladder.

  I really like this game. It's fast-paced and quite hard to master and the atmosphere and the visual effects are amazing. Of course the blinking and flashing is irritating, but that's part of the concept and makes the game even more fun to play.

  Quantasm is an epeleptic attack waiting to happen. The game is way too flashy to be good. It really is bad for your eyes playing this, and while this of course is meant to highten the difficulty of concentrating on your targets, it really ends up being the thing that kills off an otherwise good concept. I would love to play quantasm without the blinks, but for now it is moving into my folder of tested freeware games that I propably wont play again...

  New game from Ovine by Design, remake of Bedlam. Shooter with stunning visuals (Smila attacks again) and almost zero replayability. Impressive nonetheless.
