Zep's Dreamland (2004)

by Loomsoft

Developer's description:

"Meet Zep! You control Zep throughout the game. The game consists of navigating Zep throughout a level to reach a certain location which allows him to advance to the next level. This is not such an easy task, however. Many obstacles will be in your path, and it is up to you to determine the best (and sometimes only way) to get around them. Zep has the ability to create special "blocks" by using the life energy from the ground he is standing on. By building the blocks in specific patterns, Zep can alter the landscape to his ability thus allowing him to reach his goal! Again, not everything is as it seems. Zep cannot build blocks while standing of just anything. There are many types of ground that restrict Zep's building ability. In addition to being able to create these special blocks, Zep can also destroy them.

Zep is trapped in a Dream Land where almost anything goes! As much as he wants to wake up, he cannot; unless he travels completely through it, visiting each different section he dreams up. What kind of special places does Zep hold dear? Traveling deeper and deeper into Zep's Dreamland reveals more and more obstacles as his imagination runs wild! (taken from the official homepage)"

"Zep's Dreamland" is a colourful cartoonish puzzle game for the whole family. It's hard enough to be challenging and keep you occupied for hours, but not that difficult that it gets frustrating. And once you finished the regular levels, you can download new level packs from the official homepage or use the included editor to create your own world.

Note: The Windows download includes the Version 1.02 Patch A

Discussion on our forums on Zep's Dreamland

  • Pater Alf :
The game has been added to CWF's database. You can download Zep's Dreamland (for Windows, Linux and Mac) from our game info page:

  • Pater Alf :
I have to admit that this is a clever puzzle game. Quite challenging right from the beginning and after a few levels you really have to use your brain to find the solution. But after a while the game didn't get harder anymore. Of course there are some new elements (like the tunnels and the breaking stones) but once you understood the basic concept and the concept of level design you should be able to complete the game without any problems (which doesn't mean you won't have to restart some levels several times).

The tutorial was nerving as it really assumes that the player is a complete dumphead and tells you how to move and not even once, but for every direction. I wanted to shout at it: "Damned, stop it! I played computer games before you know..."

On the technical side I can't see any major flaws. Graphics are nice and cute, controlling works fine, music and sounds could be better, but aren't that bad that you want to turn it off.

I messed around with the editor a bit and it seems I'm not able to create a levelpack as well. When I try to I get a strange error message telling me that the editor is not able to find my first level (and of course it is not, because it doubled the name and is searching for Alf.mapAlf.map instead of Alf.map). I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something wrong with the editor. But in fact it seems there are a few people who were able to create levelpacks (as you can download some from the homepage).

No need to remind me. I took 5 minutes and tested the editor, and my levelset-maker crashed as well. I wonder if there is a fix for this?

EDIT: I wrote the developer to hear him about this. I also asked for permission, and for an interview. :D

  • Chroelle :
I dont know, but I will try it out to see if I can make it work somehow. Remind me if I dont post here within tomorrow (where I am leaving for a week, but I will of course read up on stuff when I return).
  • eMTe :
Ok, I make a level and save it under name emtesmapforzepsdreamland. I put it into folder "emteslevelsforzepsdreamland". Then I try to create levelset of this one map, but then editor crashes. I need more levels I suppose?
  • Chroelle :
Via game. You have to make a level pack out of them, then you can choose in the game which level pack you want to play. I haven't actually tried my own level yet, but I did make one and I did figure out this much.
  • eMTe :
I face the same problem I faced with Crayon Physics - I am too stupid to use editor. I can save levels (= I click 'save' button), but I cant find them later and I dont know how to run them - via game or editor?
  • Chroelle :
I found the difficulty in this game a bit over my head most times, but maybe that was because this was an entirely new concept in puzzlers, and not just another run off the mill. This game has an original idea, concept that really shines, gameplay that will last/loose you hours on end, a cutesy main character, an editor and a tutorial that will make small kids go..."Ok I got it, now move on". Basically what we got here is a game that covers its bases so well that I can not begin to explain it. So very well done that it is hard to see past.
  • eMTe :
Now believe me or not, but this is a mustplay.

    Puzzler of rare quality.
