1848 is a strategy game based on the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-49 in which Hungary came close to defeating Austria and only lost because of the intervention of the Tzar of Russia. It was sponsored by the Hungarian Ministry of Education.

1848 is turn-based. Gameplay revolves around moving units on map, gathering supplies and, of course, fighting. Battles are resolved automatically - result depends on many factors, like your army's and leader's statistics, weather or terrain.

Game contains 7 campaigns, which let you play either as Hungary or Austria, and 3 difficulty modes. Multiplayer lets you play via Internet, local network or by e-mail. 2-player hotseat option is also included.

  I agree, 1848 can become boring, because there's not enough variety in gameplay. Fights are resolved automatically and with mathematical precision (rules are explained in manual) and there's nothing player can do to influence it (by changing your units positions during battle etc.) once he moved his army onto enemy's hex. Everything's about moving armys around the board and supply care. Maybe it's the genre to blame, but I also feel much more could have been kicked off from idea. Not only in gameplay, but also in historical settings - everything's somewhat dull and impersonal (I talk of historical figures placed in game), reduced to statistics.
  
  Points for settings (rarely seen in genre flooded by wwii games) and bug-free technical side, but it's not enough.
  
  There's nothing worse then "correct" game - without flaws, but without shines also.

  I've been playing this on a laptop. As I have sometimes said, I love strategy games. Especially turn based ones. The (loose?) binding to the history also tickles me, so this on was a must try.
  
  Then to the actual game.
  
  Decent graphics, average user interface, and sounds which can be turned off. AI is not the best possible, and game is not really fast paced... (even for a TBS)
  
  The implementation is somewhat shallow. one could have kicked off far more from the concept. Where are the hazards during marches (like soldiers/guns being damaged during crossing flooding rivers?). Where is the affect of cold winter weather? Where is the possibility to have diplomatic relations between nations?
  
  Well, the game is ok to play. It offers the most basic elements of a TBS, and it is nice to have some historical binding to the real world. Game is technically quite flawless, except the occasional slowdown which jams the game almost unplayable on my GF's laptop - but which is solved when you save the game and restart it.
  
  Basically, ok game, but this could have been so much more..
  
  I love the genre, so [edited by scythe - don't post scores in this section] is my vote. I hope we'll get this on site though, world lacks of freeware TBSes

  No technical issues, but scrolling of main map is ferociously slow. Also, by selecting different armies in panel (see commander's picture on screen above) youre not automatically pointed to their location on the map what makes navigation uncomfortable.
