Stargunner (1996)

by Apogee Software

Stargunner is a horizontal shooter released in 1996 by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms).

There are two storylines - one from manual and one from official site - but they dont differ much, except galaxy and race names. As usual in this type of games your planet has been attacked by enemy fleet and you must destroy it, together with final boss.

Stargunner features over 30 levels, many bonuses, powerups and a store where you can upgrade your ship.

Game was released as freeware in 2005.

  • eMTe :
You can now download Stargunner from CWF and happily defend your planet, blasting hordes of enemies in the process. ^^

  • Scythe :
It's very hard, but it's a commercial game gone freeware. Other than difficulty, Stargunner has a lot of excellent options, from multiple, multiple weapons to a ton of secret content. I just wish it wasn't so hard, but it is. Play with DosBox.
  • Scythe :
While I have the game working perfectly, it's so hard it makes me want to throw something heavy through a window. One life = 4,000 credits. I lose 4 in one mission and make about 2,000 credits. Yay.
  • Chroelle :
Well I cant quite remember, but it is a new dual core bought in January, so you can imagine that it is fast - as in kick-*ss fast.
  • eMTe :
Just be aware that tweaking speed may completely ruin the sound. To the point of unplayability.

What are your PC specs btw?

  • Chroelle :
Okay. I will try that out.
  • Scythe :
    I think it's adjustable to some degree with CTRL+F11 & CTRL+F12, IIRC.
  • Chroelle :
I cant remember how to adjust the speed in dosbox Scythe. Could you explain?
  • eMTe :
Sounds like the case for Manimal (OG tech help - your first place to visit :D ).

First time I hear about such DOSBox behaviour. I know games from early 80ies can behave like this, but 1996 game? Weird.

You either have too powerful hardware or I dont know. Tweaking DB wont help much if game is extremely fast. Id rather try another program like VDM Sound or no emulator at all.

  • Scythe :
You know you can adjust the speed in DosBox, right?
