Dyson (2009)

by Alex May, Rudolf Kremers, Brian Grainger

Dyson is a realtime strategy with much of the content generated procedurally.

The goal in each level is to colonize the asteroid belt with your seedlings before AI opponents do the same. You start with one asteroid and a couple of seedlings which you can use in variety of ways: send them to colonize nearby asteroids (sometimes through fight with enemy seedlings) or use them as material for planted trees. There are two types of trees: Dyson which produce new seedlings and defensive which produce exploding pods automatically attacking enemies. To win the game you must maintain the balance between production of trees, fights and colonization.

Dyson is mouse-operated with wheel used for zooming the view.

Note:

In 2009 Dyson was renamed Eufloria and is developed further as a commercial game - so far it was heavily upgraded and ported to several platforms, including Playstation and iOS. Creators refer to Dyson as "prototype version of Eufloria" since then.

Now the outer world can also have a blast.

I had a blast playing this. I really dug deep into the game, and felt like playing for hours on end. I am not going to delete this, that is for sure!

A great very simplistic game, with lots of strategic thinking. Not many features, but more than enough to keep you on your toes.

Graphically minimalistic, and it works wonders. Sound is covered with very minimalistic measures as well and really sets the mood of none explosive warfare.

I dind't get bored of it when quitting, and that has been a while since that wawsn't the reason for quitting a game.

And afair seedlings werent shooting, clashing with each other themselves. And there was only one music theme.

For those who play it first time. ;)

  • eMTe :
This game evolves. There were no defensive trees back then and there were no big seedlings. Work in progress which means it can get only better. Or more complex, you name it.

"Dyson" is simply great. It's easy to get into it and you can play it for hours without getting boring. And I really love the design. The graphics are simple and beautiful at the same time and the soundtrack is amazing as well and fits perfectly to the atmosphere of the game.

Definitely one of my favourite freeware games in 2008!

Hmm, I think it is a game from the Procedual Generation Competition. The TIGSource competitions really always have some great games in it...
  • eMTe :
Dyson is a colonisation game where you take a set of self-replicating mining machines and attempt to gain control of an entire asteroid belt. Almost all of the game content is generated procedurally.

More than good-looking emo game imo. A bit confusing at first, but surprisingly rewarding.

The game is now called Eufloria and is no longer freeware. In a twist, the developers are now called Dyson…
