GeneRally (2002)

by Hannu Räbinä, Jukka Räbinä and James Burgess

GeneRally is a top-down arcade racing game.

Game comes originally with 32 tracks, however thanks to editor you can create your own tracks. You can also download hundreds (or more) tracks from internet - there are several fansites dedicated to GeneRally. Almost everything in game is editable. You can set the number and skill of AI opponents, number of laps, tyre wear level, car damage level etc. By selecting more than one track you automatically start championship mode in which you compete for points and final victory. By selecting only one player you play time-trial mode and you can practise each track.

GeneRally can be played in hotseat multiplayer mode by up to 6 players.

Discussion on our forums on GeneRally

  • Pater Alf :
It can be pretty hard to control the car at first. But the good thing is that there are several settings that can make it easier. So it is a good idea not to start with a Formula 1 car, but to use a normal car first. And to train alone before you race against five bots.

I like the retro graphics and the design of the tracks (even if there is at least one track on which it is sometimes hard to see everything).

So I would say that it is a pretty good racing game, but you shouldn't expect to win right from the start. It needs some training to succeed.

Its weird - I was sure that was already suggested but I cant find it when I search. I know I wanted to suggest it though at one point, and then who knows why I didn't...

GeneRally is a racing game. You can race with many different vehicles, from monster trucks, to one-wheelers, to formula-one cars, each with their own driving characteristics. You see the racing track from a fixed point in the air, so its more like you are driving radio-controlled cars on a table, and less like real driving. That view is further enhanced by the simple textures and game environment. There can be up to 6 vehicles on the track. They can be either human or computer controlled. The computer AI's driving skill can also be changed.

In the game, each player will sometimes have to go to pit, to refuel and repair, since the vehicles gets damaged after bumping into each other all the time.
