Greenie: The Helecopter Hero (2007)

by jayenkai

"Greenie: The Helecopter Hero" is a "H.E.R.O." remake that was made by Jayenkai for the Retro Remake compo 2006, but finally never entered.

You play a guy with a helicopter on his back and it is your task to rescue entombed children from an old mine. The game contains all levels of the original game by Activision as well as new levelpacks and an editor to create your own levels.

Might not cope with other "H.E.R.O." clones when it comes to sound and graphics, but it really breathes the spirit of the great Commodore classic. In fact it's that true, that it has the same issues like the original game, which are mainly control issues (it's quite hard to keep the balance between falling down and flying up).

If you loved "H.E.R.O" when you were young, you will certainly like "Greenie" as well.

A good remake of a classic. It has been redone and remade so many times, but this one is pretty good, even though the graphics are not up to par with some of the other versions. Level editor counts up on this one for me. Great job, and a good game with lots of challenge. You want to rush the levels but find out that that is not always the best approach. :)

All the original levels are included as well as two new levelpacks (which are very hard). In on of the levelpacks there seems to be a bug, because when you loose you're last life, you will always get a new one. Semms nice, but as the new live starts with the oxygene left when you died, it gets pretty useless after a while.

There's also a level editor to create your own levels.

Mostly done in 2007, the 2006 edition was walking flying and not much else. It got left behind very early in development!

Even still, you can see terrible mistakes in this, even as early in the titlescreen. Euuuw, rotating menu, what was I thinking!!!!?

Only 2 years, I've come a long long way!!!

Having said that, I do still think this is a cracking game, and I'm proud to have it up on CWF!

And, (at least true when I wrote it, maybe still is.) it's probably one of the better remakes of Hero that doesn't turn the whole game into a horrible slow motion mess of a game, using "AMAZING RENDERED GRAFIX!!!" and other nasty horrible-ness.

I stayed true, and it turned out nicely.

Some of the background graphics could be a bit prettier and the handling isn't always perfect (but wasn't in the original game as well), but after all this game is great fun and if you loved "H.E.R.O" when you were young, you will certainly like "Greenie" as well.
