Open Sonic (2009)

by Alexandre Martins

Open Sonic is an open source platformer featuring two playable "zones" divided into three levels each, three characters from Sonic universe (Sonic, Knuckles and Tails) and cooperative play (but limited to one activity only). While current version of the project is only 0.1.4 it is the last one named "Open Sonic". Next version, called Open Surge, will be 0.2.0 and will be completely original game, albeit using identical gameplay mechanism.

The goal in each regular level (both zones contain boss level) is to reach the destination with at least one of the three characters, collecting rings and killing enemies in the process. There's no save function, but due to relative shortness and low difficulty game can be finished in one sit.

There is also an in-built editor and tens of fanmade levels are available from project's page. Game has been translated to nine languages so far.

Discussion on our forums on Open Sonic

  • jhonnyvaz8 :
I have played this game before...its fun when u getting bored....thanks for the link.
  • Chroelle :
Open Sonic is just another Sonic clone, with cooperation needed and speed needed for completing. It is a good Sonic clone nonetheless, and should be credited for this. You might as well be playing the real oldschool sonic adventures as playing this, so I will recommend it to Sonic fans.
  • eMTe :
Open-source Sonic game featuring cooperation play between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Still in development, but 2 levels are playable and editor is operational.
