SuperTuxKart (2006)

by SuperTuxKart Development Team

SuperTuxKart is an open-source racing game, inspired by Mario Kart series.

Game's history can be divided into two periods. Its development started around 2000-2004 as the official site says, but STK (named TuxKart then) was eventually discontinued and left by the original developer in a very buggy and unstable version. In 2006 Joerg Henrichs took over the project and game is in constant development since then.

STK is an arcade racing game what means there's not much reality in here and game is rather fun-focused. For example there are various "weapons" which you can grab during driving and use to slow enemies down (they can do the opposite of course), like plunger, fly swapper and variety of funny bombs. Game features many characters, tracks, difficulty levels and unlockables and there's also a Grand Prix to win. STK can be played in hotseat mode by up to 4 players and network play is under development.

Linux and Mac users should check these how-tos before playing:

Discussion on our forums on SuperTuxKart

Boy, this game changed a lot over these four years when I havent played it. Improved graphics and handling, cool environmental effects, more characters, more tracks. Good that this projects hasnt been abandoned and left undeveloped like it often happens.

    Btw, current version is 0.7.3.

Well, it's certainly not "Super MarioKart". But who cares as long as it is nearly as good. Highly entertaining and addictive and with lots of different tracks, grand prixs, unlockables, challenges and different game modes it should be good fun for quite a time. And best thing is that it is very easy to learn. No great physics you have to care about, just good old easy racing fun. Great!

A game that looks quite polished. I had a lot of fun playing through the challenges in this game. Very good gameplay, and well made levels. Some of them are inspired by Mario Kart 64 which i've played a lot of back in the days.
  • Chroelle :
Ok, lets be honest - this isn't MarioKart. But it is a linux/gpl-maddened clone of it.
A great game with lots of time to spend on it. The only thing I needed was an editor, but I am not sure I would actually use it had it been there. :)

Version 0.5 released. New and improved tracks, one new game mode, new music and translations.

SuperTuxKart is a free 3d kart racing game, focusing on fun and not on realistic racing physics. Race with your kart on more than 10 tracks against Tux and his friends and be the first to cross the finishing line. With many items you can make sure that you will win. You can play with up to 4 friends on one PC racing against each other, or just try to beat the computer.

See the great lighthouse or drive through the sand and visit the pyramids. Race under water or in space, watching the stars passing by. Have some rest under the palms on the beach (watching the other karts overtaking you :) ). But don't fall in the volcano.

You can do a single race against other karts, compete in one of several Grand Prix, or try to beat the high score in time trials on your own.
