Doom, the Roguelike (2002)

by Kornel Kisielewicz

Doom, the Roguelike is an rpg variation of the (in)famous classic first person shooter, Doom.

Similarly to traditional roguelikes DoomRL is viewed from top-down perspective, is turn-based, levels are randomly generated and graphics are composed of ASCII characters. In each round you can either move, shoot the monster, reload weapon, pick up or use object etc. There are three character classes to choose - marine, scout and technician, all with unique strengths, weaknesses and so-called "traits" - skills your character can develop which affect the gameplay. The Doom part consists of monsters, weapons and objects familiar to Doom fans and original soundset. Additionally, there are plenty of level types and collectibles not found in original Doom.

Game can be saved only when you are standing on stairs. Like in Doom, if you descend you cannot return to the previous level. There are 25 floors overall generated for single game, not counting secret ones.

Note:

First "graphical" version of DoomRL has been released on 28th February 2012. Apart from visual update and several bugfixes it introduces mouse support and features enhanced audio, but rules and gameplay mechanics remain the same. Since the future of old, ASCII, game is yet unknown we will host both versions and eventually keep the old one for historical purposes if it will be discontinued.

Discussion on our forums on Doom, the Roguelike

  • Chroelle :
I just started the game - I am in the very first room - I cannot imagine my backpack being full. :)
  • Pater Alf :
If you can't pick up anything, your backpack is probably full (I think you can just carry 10 or 12 items in the beginning). You have to drop something before you can pick up something new.

And if you have problems with the keyboard, you can redefine the keys by changing the doomrl.ini. Shouldn't be a big problem.

  • Drasir-Vel :
Also try those keys next to Å and Ø, with or without shift held down. Also Å and Ø themselves.
  • Chroelle :
I have som issues with my keyboard here. I am stuck in the first screen because I need to find the > key to go downstairs, but it doesn't match the position on my keyboard it seems... Does anyone have an idea what key to use instead?
It also seemed I couldn't pick up a gun and ammo on the floor regardless how much I pressed the g key...

  • Pater Alf :
No impressive graphics??? Did you look at the monster pictures? :Nerd:
  • Drasir-Vel :
This is a very appealing roguelike, because it's much simpler with less controls to remember, and you don't have to worry about food, so you can take your time looking through the levels before going on. Impressive graphics isn't neccessary, if you have it all in the gameplay. But that doesn't mean graphics doesn't matter, because i think it's a very important part of a game. These types of games just make up for it by the feeling of simplicity and minimalism you get from the ASCI characters. And it's good to see a game of this type that's actually easy getting into for beginners. And also that it manages to keep the creepy atmosphere from Doom.
  • Chroelle :
The developer says that we should look for new updates to the game every half year or so, as the game is in constant development... Just FYI.
  • Pater Alf :
It's not dull at all. Instead it's one of the most thrilling and stunning games I've played for years...

But maybe this is a game for people that grew up with the good old games that cared for great gameplay instead of great graphics and effects.

  • jhonnyvaz8 :
This seems really dull...how can you manage to play this for even an hour??
  • Pater Alf :
If no one else wants to write anything about this game, I will do it myself:

It's simply brillant!!! So many challenge modes to unlock, so many unique weapons to find, so many medals and ranks to earn, so many different strategies to play this game. I'm absolutely amazed.

"Doom - The Roguelike" is my new game fpr boring nightshifts and I can really play that for hours without getting tired or bored.

So do yourself a favour and try it out!
