7 Days a Skeptic (2004)

by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw

Sequel to "5 Days a Stranger" and Part II in the "John DeFoe"-series...

Description by Yahtzee:
"Nearly four hundred years have passed since what became known as the DeFoe Manor Incident, when an eccentric cat burglar known as Trilby brought an end to the reign of terror inflicted by a murderous wraith, the ghost of Sir Roderick DeFoe's abused, unwanted son. The incident is now remembered only by scholars of urban myth, and the true facts of the case are lost behind endless conjecture and fictionalisation.

Mankind has moved on from mother Earth, and after the invention of warp technology, is fast mapping the universe one light year at a time. Due to a shortage of materials, the Earth Federation instigates a new program to upgrade old and retired vessels. The Mephistopheles, a small ageing scouting craft, is the first ship to undergo the process. Crewed by a new compliment of 6 crewmen, she is assigned to map out the Caracus galaxy.

Just a few days into the assignment, the crew of the Mephistopheles discover an unknown artefact floating unprotected in deep space: an ancient metal locker. Ignoring advice from the Federation to leave it for a research vessel, the captain brings it aboard and prepares to lift the lid..."

I have to admit that I was skeptical at first because I couldn't think of any way to combine the ghost story of "5 Days a Stranger" with the space setting of "7 days a skeptic.

But after playing it I have have to admit that it works perfectly and again it's the atmosphere that makes the game. Very often during the game you will open doors awaiting to see something terrible shocking behind it (in most cases there will be nothing) and in several moments you'll have goosebumps on your skin. So let me post a warning: DON'T PLAY THIS GAME AFTER MIDNIGHT WHEN YOU'RE HOME ALONE!

  • Drasir-Vel :
The sequel to 5 days a stranger takes place in a much more different place. And the story is just as good a horror story as the one that took place in the DeFoe manor, and it it is actually quite interesting to see what the link is to the prequel, because this game takes place a couple hundred years later when humans have conquored space.

The special edition of the game which previously were given to people donating 5 dollars is now free. It includes music in the game and some extra stuff like the authors commentary track through the game.

This game is even better than the prequel. The story follows follows roughly the same principle as 5 days a stranger. A murder mystery that gets really gripping at some points. You wouldn't think a point-and-click game could be this scary.

PS: Sorry for reposting something that's already mentioned. I didn't see that there already was a thread about this game before i wrote this post, but i didn't want to throw it away. The more the merrier :)

At first I was skeptic (for more than 7 days) and didn't start playing because I couldn't think of any way to combine the ghost story of "5 Days a Stranger" with the space setting of "7 Days a Skeptic".

This one is my favorite Yahtzee adventure, and they're all of high quality! The whole Star Trek feel totally sold it to me, maybe because I was watching Next Gen at the time I was playing this. It's not particularly hard, with only one puzzle that had me scratching my head, but it has a fantastically ominous atmosphere and a good story.
  • Chroelle :
