This game is an attempt at a clone of classic Colonization. They get off pretty well, but there are still a noticeable amount of bugs in the game. The game is in constant development, so it is surely just a matter of time before the game is bugfree.
If you do not know Colonization you might have a hard time figuring out what does what, and where to go for specific things. Look here for documentation.
Freecol has similar gameplay to Civilisation, Master of Magic and other great games of the past. Build up your towns and fight for American independence. You can play as different nationalities to begin with.
MarZ : Thanks to all and esp. to Peter alf for the update. I will reinstall 0.93 from the link above, move the savefiles in the freecol savedir and see what happens. The save files should all be located in the Users/etc/etc/..freecol folder.
Pater Alf : I updated the files. You can download version 0.9.3 from our game info page now:
I am not sure if one version is 0.92 (from PC format magazine CD) and the other 0.93 (Web download). How can I transfer the saved games effectively from one PC to another
Are you sure you have moved all the the user data.
Look under these folders and see if there is anything related to FreeCol:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local settings\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
It could also be because some of the user data is stored in the program folder.
I could be because they're different versions. If nothing else works, if you have the v0.92 installer, to be sure, reinstall that on the new PC.
Pater Alf : We should update our download files. We still offer version 0.8.3.
Seems we missed some updates. Please remind me if I won't do it within the next few days...
Chroelle : Well I think you need to reinstall the game, and then replace the savegames in the new version with the old ones. I am not sure you can just move all files... I am guessing it still searches for the savegames through a specific path, and that path now changed.
MarZ : I Have installed and playing freecol V0.93 and I like it. First of all, if the game freezes during next turn, click save & exit, and reload the game. You won't loose the game position at least, and it takes few seconds to reload. Another bug which takes place randomly is that when I hoover the mouse on buildings or other items, the contents / info in the corresponding bubble won't come.
My problem is that I have been playing this game on my old laptop which I do not need anymore (buying a new one) and so I transfered games (all files) from [My Documents/../freecol] to another PC (my desktop) with freecol installed. When I opened the saved games I got an 'error opening file' message. I am not sure if one version is 0.92 (from PC format magazine CD) and the other 0.93 (Web download). How can I transfer the saved games effectively from one PC to another - I have progressed quite far and not wiling to restart
* Units now slide between tiles while moving.

* Games with up to eight European players are now supported.
But the biggest change is that you can now define gameplay mechanics using XML-files. You can easily change the rules you don't like or create a different game similar to FreeCol. I f you want to know more about that, please visit the official homepage:
Pater Alf : Yes, but it is "just" an unstable and unfinished alpha version of an upcoming release. So I will wait with the file update until there is the final version...
The Fool's Errand is a mix of adventure game and puzzler. You start with incomplete map with only several pieces which give you access to certain areas (called chapters, because your adventure is inscribed on a scroll). Each area contains puzzle (called enchantment) which after solving gives you access to one or more other areas (and map pieces) and reveals hints which together with complete map will help you to solve final puzzle: The Book Of...
